Italian sculptor Hannibal Pianta and his artisans created ornate stone ornamentations on the facade and interior of  St. Mary's. .His skills and artistic talent are evident all over the city, during the period from the 1900s to the 1930s. In the aftermath of the flood of 1921, Hannibal and his craftsmen were in high demand among architects for the rebirth of downtown San Antonio.
